Stage three: Deep chocolate brown. Over the next several years, the bronze darkens to a handsome, understated brown that pairs beautifully with nearly every roof color.
Stage four: Verdigris. The famous blue-green finish — the same one that colors the Statue of Liberty. Depending on your climate, this can take fifteen to twenty years or more to fully develop. Coastal air speeds it up; dry inland climates slow it down. It's nature's slowest and most rewarding paint job.
Through every stage, that patina isn't decay — it's armor. The oxidized layer actually protects the metal beneath, which is why copper rooftop ornaments from the 1800s are still standing today.
